Epicentre is approximately 10km SSE of Bodrum, SW Turkey and 15km ENE of the Greek island of Kos. Felt throughout SW Turkey, the Dodecanese Islands and also felt in parts of mainland Greece and Turkey. Latest reports indicate that at least two people have been killed on the island of Kos, over 100 more have been injured and there is some structural damage to many buildings on the island. No deaths have been reported from Turkey, but around 70 people were injured in Bodrum.

Hundreds of aftershocks have occurred with several being felt in the region. The largest, with a magnitude of 4.8, occurred at 23:23 UTC, around an hour after the 6.7 event. Sea level readings show that a small tsunami was generated and that it effected nearby coastlines.

This region is seismically active and large and damaging earthquakes have occurrred in the past. Today's earthquake is the larest in the immediate region since a magnitude 6.9 quake near Kos in 1926.
