This earthquake was felt widely across the west of Scotland. It is the largest earthquake in the region since a magnitude 4.1 earthquakes near Oban on 29/9/1986. More recently, there was a magnitude 3.5 ML earthquake in Glenuig on 23/01/2011. Scotland's largest earthquake, a magnitude 5.2 ML event in Argyll in 1880 was 75 km to the southeast.

The earthquake was followed by a magnitude 3.4 ML event two minutes later.
