Evelyn W. Pollard (1877-1961) was an Isle of Wight pharmacist, and one of a gifted family (his elder brother was AF Pollard the historian). He was a friend of, and much influenced by, John Milne, and set up observatories of his own equipped with Milne-type booms firstly on the Island, then, after his retirement, at Dorking. For many years he provided the press with comment on world earthquakes. Further details of his observatories can be found in report WL/99/13 on UK Historical Seismological Observatories (pre-1970), available for download from the NSA reports page,
EW Pollard's seismological papers have recently been traced to his grand-niece, Mrs E Shorthouse, in Australia, who has kindly copied them to the NSA. They contain some photographs, Pollard's notes on his own life, and some interesting, and sometimes rather pithy, comments on seismology.
